The 5 week section of the lectionary in year B on the Eucharist is interrupted this year with the Solemnity of the Assumption of Our Lady falling on a Sunday. In Lumen Gentium, the Dogmatic Constitution on the church from Vatican II we read in paragraph 68: "Mary as the Mother of Jesus, glorified in body and soul in heaven, is the image and beginning of the Church as it is to be perfected is the world to come, so too does she shine forth on earth, until the day of the Lord shall come, as a sign of sure hope and solace to the people of God during its sojourn on earth." This is the cause of our celebrations on this great summer feast day! In this beautiful image from Santa Maria in Trastevere in Rome we see Mary welcomed by Jesus as the first to follow him into the glory of heaven.
The bulletin is ready on the Online Activities and Bulletin page. At Mass this weekend, we are now in 3rd of 5 Sundays where the readings focus on different aspects of the Eucharist. Above we see the scene from the first reading where Elijah is starving and has fallen asleep and is woken by an angel who has provided him with food for the journey.
The Eucharist is the food that sustains us in our spiritual life. What is it we need sustaining for though? The second reading from St Paul to the Ephesians describes the way of life we are called to by God: a life of kindness and forgiveness. It is a lovely image, but one which, we all know, can be very hard work at times! This is why we need the spiritual nourishment of the Holy Eucharist. Click here for this week's bulletin. |
